On the World Cancer Day, we’d like to raise awareness about cancer by debunking some of its most common myths. Here it goes.
Myth: Cancer free diets exist
Fact – No food causes cancer. There isn’t any evidence proving this.
So please don’t design your food choices around cancer risk. Just eat a varied and balanced diet including green vegetables.
Myth: Men can’t get breast cancer
Fact – No breasts doesn’t equate to no breast cancer. Men can also get breast cancer.
Myth: Only smokers get lung cancer
Fact – While smoking increases the risks of lung cancer, non-smokers can get it too.
Myth: Cancer has specific symptoms
Fact – There aren’t any specific cancer symptoms. The same symptoms that occur due to cancer, may also be caused by health issues.
But if a symptom persists for some time, a physical check-up is suggested just to make sure.
Myth: Lung cancer only affects men
Fact – Lung cancer can affect anyone. In fact, cases in women are alarmingly on the rise.
Myth: Exposure to Sun causes skin cancer
Fact – Many believe that over exposure to Sun causes skin cancer, which medical experts say isn’t true at all.
In fact, underexposure to Sun has serious negative implications on your health.
Myth: Cancer is mostly genetic
Fact – Only 5% of cancer is reported due to hereditary causes. It’s rarely genetic.
Myth: Bras cause breast cancer
Fact – Medical scientists say this is bogus as they fail to find any logic behind this myth.
The cliché needs to die right away.
Myth: Tumour means Cancer
Fact – Every cancer case is a tumour but every tumour isn’t cancer.
Those were the most common cancer myths. And here’s what you can do to prevent cancer:
- Avoid smoking and excess alcohol consumption
- Get vaccinated against cancer causing viruses like HPV and HepB
- Keep a low and healthy body weight
- Avoid over eating
- Make sure you have a nutritious diet
The fight for cancer is on. Do your bit by raising awareness just like this fighter did:
